Find answers to common questions about the Consortium's grantmaking process, eligibility, and funding.

The Consortium funds NJ-based organizations in three categories:

  • Nonprofit and for-profit media organizations (with nonprofit fiscal sponsor if needed): outlets providing quality journalism, reaching underserved communities, training journalists, working with marginalized communities, and having diverse leadership
  • Civic-focused organizations: addressing marginalized populations, providing civic education linked to local news, and promoting civic engagement
  • Journalism education organizations: universities, colleges, schools, and standalone organizations offering journalism training programs

The role is flexible and determined by the grantee and partner. Universities applying must provide a 10% match through additional funding, back office support, research, staffing, student support, or equivalent contributions.

The application should be completed by the project manager or leader and should be limited to one per project.

Up to one year from approval. Projects must be completed within this timeframe, with grantees providing regular updates.

Use the following language: “This project is funded by a grant from the New Jersey Civic Information Consortium, an independent nonprofit organization.”

Include all anticipated expenditures such as staffing, freelancers, community stipends, equipment, events, and fiscal sponsor fees.

Project costs including back office support, research, staffing, and community stipends. Funds cannot be used for lobbying purposes under any circumstances.

The Consortium cannot provide additional funding beyond the maximum grant award. Applicants should seek other sources or apply for renewal grants.

Yes, the limit is 10%.

Funds must support the proposed project. The Consortium will work with grantees to extend timelines, redirect funds, or process returns.

Signed award letter, 501(c)(3) proof, university partner documentation, and a valid Payment Network ID via Bill.com.

No. The Consortium is an independent nonprofit; state law specifically prohibits the state, Consortium, or universities from having editorial control or ownership of funded projects.
