CASE STUDY

The New Jersey Civic Information Consortium is pioneering a new model for strengthening local journalism, rebuilding trust, and fostering media entrepreneurship across the state. A newly released case study highlights the Consortium’s successes, challenges, and opportunities for growth—offering key insights for grantees, legislators, funders, and industry leaders.

Authored by Dickson L. Louie, a Lecturer at the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Davis and a member of the Board of Directors of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, and Marisa Porto, Knight Chair of Local News and Sustainability at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the study provides key insights, takeaways, and recommendations for states and organizations seeking to rebuild local news ecosystems and strengthen democracy.

In addition to the core study, four in-depth grantee spotlights are included, bringing the data to life with powerful examples of how Consortium-funded initiatives are transforming news coverage and civic engagement in New Jersey communities. The insights from this study not only reflect the progress we’ve made together but also set the stage for the Consortium’s continued leadership in strengthening civic information and local journalism.
